ARTISAN TILE FACTORY
It is undeniable that mankind has left an irreversible mark on the planet's surface – so much so that the name of a new geological epoch has been proposed: The Anthropocene. How do we as architects level with playing a fundamental role in the creation of this mark? Is there room for architecture that embraces the change humans have left on the landscape, instead of simply ignoring or working around it?
Currently, the Capadoccia region is home to several food storage tunnels that are carved using a machine referred to as a "mole." Interested in the mole's capacity to carve with precision and in all directions and the unique surface pattern left behind by its carving, Lightning explores novel methods of tunnel carving and space making.
Using AI image generation and the synthesis of Iznik tiles photographed throughout Turkey, several "uncanny" Iznik tiles were created to challenge the traditional rules of the artform and create a contemporary interpretation. This new artform would tile the walls and be researched in the studio spaces.
